Chapter 8
The Mission
Just as I suspected, the confrontation between Pat and I really did help ease a lot of the tension, making our house feel more like a home. Confronting my own insecurities helped me to feel better about myself. Letting my guard down with Sonny and Pat helped me to better cope with the death of my grandmother. And the Orlando massacre opened the eyes of a lot of close minded people, like myself, on the dangers and struggles of the LGBT community. All the events that have occurred over the last month have made me realize that my life is not perfect and it will probably never be, but it can always be a lot worse, which is why the new me is trying to enjoy every moment.
“We have to plan something special for Father’s Day Weekend.” Danaj said, while we tossed the soft ball back and forth in the big back yard.
“Something like what?” I asked “Neither one of us has any money.”
“We don’t need money to make them happy”
“How do you figure? Look around us! Sonny and Pat are rich! They could care less about a measly homemade card or a kindergarten art project. They wear name brand clothes by designers I can’t even pronounce. We will embarrass ourselves presenting them with anything less than they already have.”
“You think you know everything don’t you? You may be the first born but I am the first adopted. I’ve known Sonny and Pat all of my life. I’ve been through 9 Father’s Days with them so far and each year I make them proud by planning something special without having any money. That’s what I love about Sonny and Pat, they’re rich in their hearts, not in their wallets, but people like you can’t see the difference because you’re too busy judging a book by its cover.”
My new little sister Danaj was a sass box. She had no other choice but to be. She’s a black girl raised by 2 gay men. Being sassy comes natural for her. Danaj is tall, with a solid figure already at the age of 8 she has dark skin and kinky hair. Sonny and Pat have a special hair dresser that braids it every now and then but on the days she’s not able to, Danaj actually does her own hair. She wears it out in a natural fro with a headband to push it off her face, revealing the melanin in her smooth glowing skin.
When I look at her, I get an instant urge to want to protect her. She has no idea how much of a threat she is to this world, simply by being a black woman born in white America. People like Donald Trump, who is running for presidency, don’t want to see her make it. But not even Donald Trump can stop the calling God has on the black woman’s life. Just because I’m not black doesn’t mean I can’t help shield the black woman from the attacks of this world.
